SARA GETTYS

In a culture where the rise and fall of pop stars and politicians mark epic but ephemeral trails across our cultural landscape, Jesus is one the few enduring figures recognized by American society today. Although he a religious figure, his presence has moved outside church walls and into our greater common culture, where he is reinterpreted through political, technological and creative visions. As this figure intersects different aspects of our culture, Jesus becomes a mirror, reflecting our beliefs, values and expressions of spirituality. After the crucifixion, participants in the annual Good Friday live Stations of the cross at St. Joseph's church in Sunnyside gather for a group picture, taken by the wife of the man playing Jesus, Dianna Olmedo.
