Coming into my job here at the Yakima Herald, I was never really considered a photographer, but more of “the video guy.”
I’ve been very lucky though to have the chance to shoot photos on a near daily basis for either the print product or online galleries. This has not only made me more comfortable with the equipment we use, but also the subjects we shoot.
One of the natural fits for me though was shooting sports — or at least I thought that would be the case. Turns out that it takes a lot of practice and skill to turn that shot from a “cool picture” to a “great shot” — this one was just a little bit off, as I didn’t expect the ball to kick as much off the dirt as it did, cutting off the top of the player’s glove.
But, the best way to learn is by hopping right back on the horse — and for a guy like me, just shooting a ton of photos.
