Last week, I photographed a ten year old that won a state competition in boxing last fall. I knew that it was going to be a pretty visual subject, and I wanted to make sure that I got something that really put the viewer in the action.
When he was working on a punching bag I squatted down next to it and got the shot I was looking for. I then proceeded to almost get taken out by the punching bag just to the left of me. While involved in shooting, I had failed to notice another student come over to start working on it. The moral of the story – if you are taking a risk of being hit in the face photographing boxing; do it when it’s the children boxing and not the adults.
