It’s a simple concept. Or at least it seems simple. If you don’t own a photo you can’t use it without permission.
It seems, however, that a lot of folks think that a photo on the Internet is free for the taking and using.
We’ve had three cases of photo theft and unauthorized use in the past two months. A local non-profit organization, a high school and Yakima City Council candidate all pulled photos from our website for use on their sites, Facebook page and an electronic newsletter.

When contacted, both organizations and the candidate were very responsive and immediately deleted the photos. I was able to talk to one person directly responsible for the photo poaching and he said he never knew it was illegal to simply take photos off the internet.
Well, now he knows.
So, for everyone else – it’s illegal to pull photos from our website and use them without permission. Simple as that.
