World Cup soccer fever has gripped the world and Yakima (or, at least one segment of Yakima) is no exception.
A group of enthusiastic soccer fans was gathering at a local bar to watch the United States’ opening match against Ghana. Needing some sort of feature photo for our local news section front the next morning I figured that photos of the fans watching the game would be a good and timely photo.
Thirty-one seconds into the match the US’ Clint Dempsey scored a goal and I scored this photo of jubilant fans.
Problem was, I could only stay a half-hour before having to go to another assignment. Whatever photo we ran in the paper would have to reflect the outcome of the match and, not knowing when I left whether the US would win or lose, that meant I also needed a sad (or at least concerned) fan photo. We would run that photo if the US lost.
Luckily (for me, the fans and the US soccer team) the United States prevailed 2-1 and we were able to run the happy fans photo. But if the US had lost at least I had my bases covered.
