I wish I still had a copy of the photo I shot of the Cashmere High School baseball team celebrating after they beat Cascade High School to win the Caribou Trail League back in … wow, maybe 1993. I can’t really remember. I was working for the Cashmere Valley Record back then. I do remember that they won it with first and third double steal. The base runner could have won an academy award for his slip and fall between first and second and Cascade’s catcher bit and charged out from behind the plate to throw him out. I remember then coach Bill Yousey sending the runner from third: “Go! Go! Go!” in an urgent whisper. I don’t remember who it was who scored, but what an ending to a game.
So fast forward a bunch of years and Cashmere is playing Naches Valley for the state championship. I have to admit I was hoping Naches Valley would win, which would have meant a better photo for our sports section. But it was fun to see Cashmere celebrate their championship and to remember that other photo that I shot so long ago (plus, my photo did appear on the front of The Wenatchee World). This year’s Bulldog squad was probably the best high school team in any sport that I’ve ever watched play, and I congratulate them on their championship.
