Special Olympians

Shooting a Special Olympics track meet is like shooting any other track meet.

Sure, the Special Olympians have a different set of challenges than other athletes but the competition and the emotions are just as real, just as genuine. I strive to photograph Special Olympians just as I would photograph any athlete.

My favorite photo from the track meet;

Special Olympian Nizaleth Guzman, left, beams after earning a blue ribbon for winning a 100-meter dash as Jesica Fragosa-Antolin shows off the ribbons she's earned at the first Special Olympics Washington Yakima Track Meet on May 23, 2012. Ninety-six Special Olympians from around central Washington competed in running and field events. The two are members of the Robertson Elementary School Rockets team. (GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic).

Regardless of their special needs, these girls are happy with their wins. And that’s what I want to show our readers.
