Adventure

Well, my second assignment for the annual 2012 edition was even more adventurous than the first. Reporter Jane Gargas and I headed out to the former town of Roza, across the Yakima River and about two miles north of the Roza Dam. Our guide was Sadie Thayer, the Museum Director for the Kittitas County Historical Museum. After braving mudholes, places with ruts so deep we started to scrape the underside of the car and hills so steep the truck felt like it was going to tip over, we were finally stopped by a large gully going through the road. While it looked like other people had crossed it, we decided not to risk it, and that’s when trouble started. While backing down the hill, we ended up in a ditch, tires spinning, mud flying, and rubber burning.

Luckily, after a bit of thought and some pushing, we were able to get the photo truck out of the ditch and make it back down the hill. This was the only photo I got to make — we didn’t make it to Roza today. But we’re all three game to try again. This time with a shovel in the trunk and maybe a bag of gravel to help with any future traction troubles!
