As I shoot more food photography, I’m working on developing a set of props to create mini-stories in the images you see in my Fresh column and other food features. I come from a family of collectors, so part of it is no doubt simply an excuse to buy pretty things, things that I can label “useful,” if they’re going to serve photography and not simply sit around my house for years. Lately, I’ve been smitten with pretty old tea sets and sterling silverware. While I haven’t had a whole lot of luck with the silverware, I have found some pretty saucers at yard sales and thrift stores, paying no more than about fifty cents for each of them. I thought they were perfect for this month’s Fresh column, to hold the dainty cucumber sandwiches.
I hope someday to have a vast and interesting collection of props, and in the meantime, finding them is like a treasure hunt at every yard sale.
