“Fight fire aggressively but provide for safety first.”That’s the first of the 10 Standard Fire Orders. I know that because at one point, I took a basic firefighting course to earn my “red card.” I also remember a lot of the 18 watchout situations, including “Unburned fuel between you and the fire.” I kept looking at the fire creeping down the hill in front of us, knowing that once it hit the bottom of the canyon, it would start burning uphill toward us. “We won’t be here much longer, will we,” I said to one of the firefighters nearby. He just smiled and said, “Probably not.”
