I like to think of my work as a journalist as being a community’s best friend. Now, a best friend makes you better by encouraging you, celebrating your achievements, but also by telling you when you have bad breath or that you made a poor choice. So when I had to go by the house where the girl was shot, I was doing the latter. We have a problem with violence in our community and we need to take care of it. And who else was at the house but KING 5 TV news from Seattle, there to tell their viewers about our community’s misfortune. Do they come over and produce stories that encourage us or celebrate our achievements? No. And they don’t need to come over here for this story, either. They aren’t a friend to our community, they are a bully who only comes around to put us down and spread negative rumors. I have no more use for them than I have use for the losers who shot that girl.
