Memorial Day

We shoot Memorial Day events every year, and I always worry about being redundant from year to year, but I’ve found that if I concentrate on shooting people and not just the event, I end up with strong pictures. And arrive early and stay afterward. That’s how I came upon Destiny Simpson, her “Step Dad” Mike Brown and friend Lonnie Lowrie decorating the grave of Simpson’s father, James Simpson, after the ceremony had ended. Simpson and Brown were close friends, served together in Iraq and spend six years in the same National Guard platoon. Brown said Simpson died about a year ago, stateside, of “wounds he received in Iraq.” Brown talked about wounds soldiers receive that people don’t always see, but that can end up being just as fatal as a roadside bomb. I know Destiny misses her father, and Brown and Lowrie miss their friend. My heart goes out to them, all veterans who have passed and their families and friends.
