Minding your mother

When I was growing up, my mother’s constant refrain to me was “don’t leave your shoes in the middle of the floor.”

But she would probably have made an exception for firefighters.

Yakima firefighters' shoes, left on the floor of the station, where they changed from street shoes into turnouts. (GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic)

Yakima Fire Department firefighters left their street shoes in the middle of the firehouse floor at the Yakima airport as they hastily changed into their turnout gear to respond to the emergency landing of a Horizon Airlines flight.

The aircraft, with one engine of two engines malfunctioning, landed without incident.

And I, like these Yakima firefighters, still leave my shoes in the middle of the floor.
