Teens+worms make my day

One thing I love about this job is that I can come into work grumpy (yep, was having one of those days) and it can be totally changed around by an assignment. I was talking to reporter Adriana Janovich as we walked to get a cup of coffee (step one in making a grumpy Sara less grumpy) and she mentioned she had an assignment that afternoon and if I wasn’t busy, I could come. It was an outdoor gardening assignment. (step 2: get out of the office, into the sunshine) I said sure and we headed off to Wilson Middle School to check out their garden. There, we met four smart, articulate and passionate middle-school gardeners.

These young people come in early to school and work after school to tend to the school’s organic garden and take care of the worm boxes they use to fertilize the soil. I did, in fact, learn a lot about worms that I didn’t know. Note: one reason to keep print newspapers around, worms can eat them and turn them into highly fertile poop to help grow organic lettuce. Newspapers+worms= salad. Who knew? (not me!).

So after an hour of talking to these young gardeners, learning things that I didn’t know, but will now be able to use in my own garden, shooting some photos, getting out of the office, breathing fresh air, riding to an assignment with one of my favorite reporters, and having a cup of coffee, the world was a much better place. Some days, this job rocks.
