I’ve found that messy, uncomfortable situations often make the best photos. A soccer game played in the rain with the whole field muddy. Fun to stand around and shoot — maybe not. The potential for great photos complete with mud splashes, dramatic slides, and great impact photos with water drops flying, yes, yes, and yes. So yesterday, when I was assigned the steeplechase race at the Don Holder Relays at Eisenhower, I knew the shot I wanted, and I knew I wasn’t going to stay dry to get it. Here’s what I was after:

One of my beliefs about photojournalism is that if you want to convey an experience, often you have to be willing to be involved in that experience, to get in close, to get down on the ground or up in the air, to get dirty, wet, cold, hot, whatever. After all, clothes (and to a certain extent, cameras) will dry.
